Hernán Díaz Alonso
He is Director/Chief Executive Officer of SCI-Arc in Los Angeles, and Founder and Principal of Los Angeles-based design practice Xefirotarch. He is an Argentinian architect, designerand educator widely credited for spearheading the transition of SCI-Arc to digital technologies, playing a key role in shaping the school’s graduate curriculum in the past decade. As SCI-Arc director, he oversees the direction of an institution with more than 500 students and 80 faculty members, many of whom are well known in the fields of architecture and design. Along with his leadership at SCI-Arc, Alonso is principal of the Los Angeles-based firm Xefirotarch, known for producing grotesque and sometimes unsettling work that challenges responses to environment. Additionally, Diaz Alonso has been named winner of the 2005 MoMa PS1’s Young Architects Program (YAP), the AR+D Award for Emerging Architecture and an honorable mention in the 2013 P/A Awards.
Kivi Sotamaa is an award winning international architect & designer, design thinker, and pioneer of digital design based in Helsinki. He believes that architectural environments must appeal to our emotions, and seduce us into exploring new ways of being in the world.
Sotamaa is a full time practitioner at Ateljé Sotamaa, which he co-directs with his sister Tuuli. The studio focuses on ambitious, holistic projects where people experience is in the key role. The most recent work of Ateljé Sotamaa include the Atelier House, the Fazer Visitor Centre - over twenty artworks and a flagship store, Finnjävel restaurant interior with its 146 bespoke objects, and the architecture for the upcoming Finnish pavilion for the 2017 World Expo in Astana Kazakhstan.
In addition to heading his practice Sotamaa has been the founder and director of ADD Aalto University Digital Design Laboratory 2010-2015, Associate Professor at UCLA Department of Architecture and Urban Design 2006-2014, Assistant Professor at the Ohio State University Knowlton School of Architecture 2003-2006, and Visiting Professor at the Universität für Angewandte Kunst, Institut für Architektur in Vienna 2006-2007.
Kivi Sotamaa is trained at the University of Art and Design Helsinki (Aalto University) with adjunct studies at the Helsinki University of Technology and the Royal College of Art London. His work is widely published and exhibited, and can be found in numerous museum collections around the world.
